Sustainability Review
A read-only review of your AWS footprint through the Well-Architected sustainability pillar: utilization, placement, and architecture choices that cut carbon — and, almost always, the bill with it. Delivered as a carbon workstream on top of the Cost Optimization Scan, because on AWS the carbon levers and the cost levers are mostly the same levers.
Efficiency you can report — and bank
- Emissions baseline — your footprint from the AWS Customer Carbon Footprint Tool, normalized so next quarter’s number means something
- Utilization waste — idle and oversized capacity burning watts for nothing; the same findings that cut the bill cut the footprint
- Placement efficiency — region and instance-family choices (including Graviton) weighed against your latency and data-residency constraints
- Storage footprint — lifecycle-less growth, snapshot sprawl, and tiering opportunities scored for both carbon and cost
- Sustainability-pillar practices — where you stand against the questions AWS scores in the sixth Well-Architected pillar
The mechanics
Read-only access: Customer Carbon Footprint Tool, Cost Explorer, CloudWatch. One 30-minute kickoff, one 60-minute walkthrough. No agents, no production access.
Sold as a +$1,500 add-on to the $4,500 Cost Optimization Scan — from $6,000 total for the combined Cost & Carbon Review. Standalone carbon-only engagements are scoped and quoted on the call.
Deliverables, not impressions
Seven to nine days, start to walkthrough
-
1
Days 1–5 — the Cost Scan runs
The Cost Optimization Scan workstream: CUR history, utilization data, and the ranked savings backlog — with CCFT emissions data collected alongside.
-
2
Days 6–7 — the carbon lens
The same evidence re-scored for emissions: placement, instance families, storage tiers; constraints interview covers latency, residency, and compliance limits.
-
3
Days 8–9 — report and walkthrough
Combined backlog (dollars and carbon per item), footprint baseline, and reduction roadmap delivered; walkthrough; access revoked.
Book this one when
- A customer, investor, or RFP has started asking for cloud-emissions numbers and you need answers that survive scrutiny
- ESG reporting season is approaching and the cloud line is currently a shrug
- You want the cost-cutting benefits of efficiency work and a sustainability story from the same engagement
This review is delivered with the Cost Optimization Scan as one engagement — the Cost & Carbon Review, from $6,000 combined. The sustainability pillar is also part of every Architecture Assessment.
Frequently asked questions
Can you give us an exact carbon number?
We give you what the AWS Customer Carbon Footprint Tool supports — which has real limits (monthly granularity with roughly a three-month data delay, coarse service-level detail) that we state rather than paper over. What you get is a defensible baseline, a tracking method, and reductions you can actually demonstrate. Anyone promising per-request carbon precision on AWS today is selling something else.
Is this greenwashing prep?
No — everything in the report is grounded in account evidence, and the reporting language we hand you claims only what the evidence supports. The pleasant surprise of honest sustainability work: most of it cuts your bill, so the business case stands even if nobody asks about carbon again.
How does this relate to the Cost Optimization Scan?
It runs on top of it — one engagement, one access grant, the same evidence read through two lenses. The Scan produces the ranked dollar backlog; the carbon workstream adds the emissions baseline, placement analysis, and reportable language for another $1,500. Utilization waste is both a cost and a carbon finding, so most of the reduction roadmap pays for itself in the bill.
What does it cost?
From $6,000 as the combined Cost & Carbon Review: the $4,500 Cost Optimization Scan plus $1,500 for the carbon workstream — one engagement, one access grant, two lenses on the same evidence. The sustainability pillar is also already included in every full Architecture Assessment. Standalone carbon-only work is quoted on the call.
